VAEYI Installation and Maintenance Testing Family: How do FA1000 and FA8000 work together?

Data: 2026-07-31 Number of views: 236 Source: VAEYI

Nanjing VAEYI Technology currently offers two testing instruments—FA1000 and FA8000. Many engineers ask: What are the differences between the two? Which one should I use? Can I use both? This article clarifies the positioning, differences, and compatibility of the two products.

First, understand the difference between PON networks and ordinary fiber optic links.

To understand the division of labor between FA1000 and FA8000, one must first understand the difference between PON networks and ordinary fiber optic links.

Standard fiber optic links (metropolitan area networks, backbone networks, data center patch cords): point-to-point connections with no splitters in between. The optical signal loss from point A to point B is simply the attenuation of the fiber itself plus connector loss. OTDR testing is relatively straightforward—a large enough dynamic range allows you to visualize the entire link.

PON network (the mainstream architecture of FTTH): point-to-multipoint connection, with a splitter between the central office OLT and the user ONU. A single optical fiber is split to multiple users (1×32, 1×64, or even 1×128) through the splitter. The splitter is a high-loss device—the insertion loss of a 1×64 splitter is about 20dB, and the power of the optical signal drops sharply after passing through the splitter.

This is the difficulty of PON testing: for an OTDR to penetrate the splitter and see the branch fiber, it needs a larger dynamic range. The signal from a regular OTDR is "eaten up" by the splitter and cannot be measured later.

II. Positioning of FA8000: Dedicated to PON networks

The FA8000 is a comprehensive PON network line tester, with its core capability being penetration splitter testing. It requires a wider dynamic range to overcome splitter insertion loss and visualize the condition of the branch fibers behind the splitter.

Typical test scenarios for PON networks:

· If a user's repair request cannot be received, determine whether the problem lies with the main fiber optic cable or a branch fiber optic cable.

· An abnormal loss was observed in a branch after the beam splitter; the faulty branch was located.

· PON link online monitoring (testing without service interruption)

These scenarios all require the OTDR to be able to "see through" the beam splitter, which is the core value of the FA8000.

III. Positioning of FA1000: General Installation and Maintenance Comprehensive Testing

The FA1000 is a multi-functional optical time domain reflectometer for installation and maintenance, designed for general installation and maintenance scenarios. It does not aim to penetrate beam splitters, but rather covers a wider range of testing needs:

· FTTH link acceptance (independent testing from the central office to the splitter front end, or from the splitter to the user end).

· Construction and maintenance of metropolitan area networks/secondary backbone networks

· Loss and breakage testing of fiber optic patch cords and drop cables in the computer room.

· Continuity and wiring sequence testing of copper network cables in structured cabling

The FA1000A has a dynamic range of 30dB (1310nm), a testing range of 300m~120km, and an event dead zone of 3m. These parameters are sufficient for general installation and maintenance scenarios—the 30dB dynamic range, assuming an attenuation of 0.35dB/km, can cover single-mode fiber links over 80km. The 3m event dead zone also allows for the differentiation of adjacent events in densely populated environments such as computer room patch cords.

The FA1000 also integrates a stable light source, optical power meter, red light source, network cable testing, and data storage, covering the comprehensive testing needs of both optical fiber and copper cable in one device.

IV. Division of Labor Boundaries between the Two Products

A table showing the division of labor between the two products will make it clear:

In short: Use FA8000 for PON testing that requires penetrating the optical splitter; use FA1000 for other installation and maintenance testing scenarios.

V. How to use the two products together

In actual installation and maintenance teams, the FA1000 and FA8000 are not mutually exclusive, but rather used together.

Scenario 1: Acceptance of New FTTH Project

· Use FA1000 to perform backbone fiber testing from the central office to the splitter section (OTDR dual-wavelength testing + optical power meter end-to-end verification).

· Use FA8000 to test the PON link from the optical splitter to the user segment (verify the entire link by penetrating the optical splitter).

Scenario 2: Emergency Repair of PON Network Faults

· First, use the red light source of the FA1000 to perform a quick connectivity check.

· Use the FA1000's OTDR to locate the main fiber optic fault due to connectivity issues.

· If the main beam is normal, use the FA8000 to penetrate the beam splitter to locate the branch fault.

Scenario 3: Comprehensive Maintenance Inspection

· The FA1000 performs general link inspections (OTDR scanning + optical power sampling + network cable testing).

· FA8000 performs specialized inspections of PON networks (monitoring the status of branches after the optical splitter).

Recommended team configuration: One FA1000 unit should be assigned to each installation and maintenance team for routine general testing, while teams with high PON maintenance frequency should be assigned an additional FA8000 unit for private network testing. VAEYI's two products form a "general + private network" testing combination, covering all testing needs of the installation and maintenance team.

VI. Model subdivision of FA1000 and its compatibility with FA8000

The FA1000 itself has two models: FA1000A and FA1000F. When used with the FA8000:

· The FA1000A (1310/1550nm dual wavelength) is used for standard link testing, forming a "standard + PON" test combination with the FA8000 for PON testing.

· The FA1000F (1625nm online test wavelength) is used for online monitoring of activated service lines, forming an "online + PON online" monitoring combination with the FA8000's PON online testing.

The 1625nm wavelength is separated from the service wavelengths (1310/1550nm) and accessed through a wavelength division multiplexer, allowing for testing without interrupting services. The online testing capabilities of the FA1000F and FA8000 work together to achieve uninterrupted service monitoring from the backbone to the branches.

The FA1000F has a dynamic range of 28dB (1625nm), slightly different from the FA1000A's 30dB (1310nm). In online testing scenarios, service signals are already running in the link. The 1625nm wavelength is accessed via a wavelength division multiplexer. The actual test distance depends on link loss and filter performance. 28dB is sufficient for maintenance scenarios on already operational lines.

VII. Selection Recommendations

Selection recommendations for installation and maintenance teams:

1. For general installation and maintenance (metropolitan area network, backbone network, structured cabling): Equipped with FA1000A, its six-in-one functions cover daily needs.

2. For FTTH installations involving PON maintenance : FA1000A + FA8000, general-purpose + full PON coverage.

3. Perform maintenance on existing lines : FA1000F + FA8000, online testing + PON online testing.

4. Large-scale installation and maintenance team : FA1000A + FA1000F + FA8000, covering all scenarios.

Nanjing VAEYI Technology's installation and maintenance testing family doesn't force users to choose between two products; instead, it provides a set of combinable testing solutions. The FA1000 manages general-purpose applications, while the FA8000 manages dedicated networks—configurable as needed, each fulfilling its specific function.

From a product line perspective, VAEYI has segmented the boundaries of installation and maintenance testing scenarios with two products. The FA1000's six-in-one integration solves the "breadth" problem—one device covers multiple testing needs; the FA8000's PON penetration capability solves the "depth" problem—the branching status can be seen even behind the splitter. The combination of breadth and depth constitutes complete installation and maintenance testing capabilities.
